Description

Foreword

Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT) located in Nonoichi City adjacent to Kanazawa city in Ishikawa Prefecture is recognized as "high value of education added value" with students' support for voluntary learning support. On the Ogaigaoka campus visited this time, a new campus has been expanded to accommodate the evolution of times and technologies, mainly on buildings designed by Yukio Otani (1924-2013), an architect known as the work of the National Kyoto International Conference Hall .
According to Mr. Akira Tsutsui, an adviser to the University Architects Institute, who responded to the interview this time, according to Mr. Akira Tsutsuki, "A self-development center, an innovation & design studio, an entrepreneur Facilities such as slab are also substantial.Because of that, students stay at university for a long time, 300 days a year to study, "he says that the environment is in place.
It is also famous for library fulfillment, boasting not only books and magazines, but also one of the leading domestic LP record · archives "popular music collection".These are open to the public not only for students but also for certain procedures.
It was Mr. Shuzo, who is a professional in university libraries that is unusual in Japan.Ms. Shuji studied library science at the American parliament library planned a comprehensive library center of Kanazawa Institute of Technology. At the center there is also a collection of rare books called "Akebono Bunko of Engineering" gathered by Shuzo's network.Among them are scientific giants such as Galilei, Newton, Faraday and Darwin who changed the history of natural science and engineering, as well as Alberti's Architecture Ten Book, Palladio's Architecture Four Books, as well as architects A masterpiece by is also kept.Currently, as digitization of information accelerates, these rare books are valuable cultural heritages that can directly experience the greatness of human creativity.
The JIA-KIT architectural archives were founded in collaboration with the Japan Architects Association (JIA) and Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT) in 2007.Architectural Archives Institute that is under the jurisdiction of JIA-KIT Archive Archives materials is a high-level specialized research institution established in Japan to collect, save, organize, research, publish, utilize and inherit materials related to a few buildings.

Establishment of architectural archives research center

- Japanese architecture has attracted attention from all over the world, including producing many prizes for Pritzker Prize, which is also said to be the Nobel Prize for architecture. However, there is no institution that collects, preserves, and researches the valuable archives in Japan together.Under such circumstances, the existence of Kanazawa Institute of Technology 's Archive Archives Institute is very valuable.First of all, please tell us from the background of its establishment.

Indeed, Japanese architecture has earned an international reputation. That is the result of steady achievements for many years.Sketches, drawings and models, which are records of the process by which one architecture is created, are valuable assets, and I think that taking over to posterity is our important responsibility. However, in Japan, preservation and inheritance of architectural archives are hardly done, valuable materials are lost and dissipating.Things that have been lost will not be restored.Especially drawings and sketches before the spread of computers are handwritten on paper, so you have to take action as soon as possible.
Therefore, the emergency evacuation centered on the Japan Architects Association (JIA) was born. In 2007, the Japan Architects Association and Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT) collaborated to establish "JIA - KIT Architectural Archives ", and at the same time this institute was established as a base to manage the JIA - KIT archive archives materials, and this research institute was established, aiming at collecting, preserving, organizing, researching, publishing, utilizing and succeeding materials on architecture started.

- Specifically, what kinds of materials related to buildings are collected and preserved?

The classification archives are classified into three major types. The first is JIA - KIT archive archives, which are architect 's drawings and photographs such as Mr. Takefumi Aida, Hiroshi Oe, Miyawaki Dado etc, inside which Lewis Kahn et al. Sketches of global architects are also included. The second one is related data on historic buildings in Kanazawa city, there are pictures of the time in addition to drawings.Mitsuoka is KIT 's own architectural archive, including lecture notes and papers by Mr. Kishida Hirohito and research materials on modern architecture in Kanazawa city which Kimazawa city handled.

- What kind of materials are collected about architect archives? Also, how are architects selected for archiving?

document over quite diverse, design drawings original drawing, sketch, model, structural calculation documents, equipment design drawings, photographs, letters, notebook, notes, slide, microfilm, contracts, books and so on.
Regarding the architect, members of the Architectural Archives Committee of JIA and KIT rather than selecting this will hold a meeting, and in addition to the management policy and collection targets, they will give donations to JIA member architects I will. And we have consulted with the architect of the offer, and the architect and the JIA - KIT architecture archives are holding the valuable materials after signing a contract between them.JIA has established "NPO Building Culture Succession Organization (Mr. Mitsuru Senda)" in 2014 to permanently plan and manage the JIA - KIT architecture archives, and here "JIA - KIT architecture Archives committee "is put in place.

- What kind of things do architects donate expect?

Thorough valuable materials should be arranged and kept according to certain rules.More importantly, it is not only that these materials are kept in a box, but it is a feeling that we want you to transfer it to posterity as a living material, to open it widely, and to make use of it in the development of architectural culture Is it not? What we are aiming for is also to research and establish architectural archiving as academics.

- In fact, how much data is collected?

Approximately 60 million points in terms of the score. As of now, it is the data gathered from 26 architects, architectural design offices, and construction related organizations.Major architects include Takemasu Aida (11 works), Kazumasa Yamashita (400 pieces), Kawasaki Kiyoshi and Kozo Azusa (300 works each), Kurokawa Masayuki (296 works), etc. Design drawings drawings and sketches, photos etc. .

What is archiving of architectural materials?

- What exactly is archiving?

It is necessary to think about various aspects of jam .
First of all, gather information on the location and condition of building materials and collect them from those with high storage priority. In addition, we will digitally record the material whose deterioration is predicted and publish it digitally. At the same time, we are going to develop repair and storage technology with the goal of preserving the original for many years. The second is to create a system that allows anyone to access the materials, such as organizing and converting huge materials, developing common search systems in the country. The third is to open up a database on archives through the Internet, exhibitions and publishing activities, and to enhance the convenience so that everyone can touch and utilize the building knowledge.
Furthermore, the fourth is to seek ways to apply it to building education, as a matter of course.Various programs are organized mainly at architecture students at our university.Fifthly, we will conduct surveys and photographs on historic buildings and urban designs, accumulate the survey records, and also develop efficient storage systems at the same time.Sixth is the storage and organization of information and records related to the process of building design.
Lastly, it is exactly the current digital technology to exploit the three-dimensional data such as various buildings, townscape and explore effective utilization.

- That is a work that requires enormous effort and time.

Jam Yes.It is difficult to promote everything with our laboratory alone, but we believe that it is not impossible if various organizations work together on networks. In fact, it is hard to simply store vast amounts of documents sent with a carton in a cardboard box in a proper condition.Furthermore, it is necessary to have enormous labor even by opening corrugated boards and drawing cases, classifying drawings and materials one at a time and classifying them according to projects.Currently, work is proceeding while students are participating in centering on Yasuji Sato who is a full-time researcher at the Archives Institute of Architecture, but it is quite troublesome.

- The Architects Archives Institute has been holding a planning exhibition and a lecture meeting aimed at architects since the creation, using the JIA-KIT archive archives materials.Last year there was also an exhibition by Mr. Takefumi Aida, famous for the series of houses. When seeing the brochure, I think that multifaceted efforts such as a lecture meeting by the person himself / herself and a tour of the actual work (house trees X) are wonderful as well as the exhibition of the work.

Shinki archives are also important, but what you get from real architecture and architects is more precious than that.

Current status of Japanese architecture archives

- In recent years, I feel that the awareness of inheriting historically valuable things and cultural heritage is getting higher than before.Regarding architecture, collections such as the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and others are known, but what kind of situation is the construction archiving in Japan as far as Mr. Shigeru know?

In Japan there are only a few organizations that archive architectural materials systematically, but in 2012 the "National Museum of Modern Architecture Materials" under the jurisdiction of the Cultural Affairs Bureau was established in Yushima, Tokyo.Although I am also a member of the Steering Committee, I am gathering and storing information collection materials on building materials, exhibiting / spreading education, investigating.

- You also have a holding exhibition? Last year, I went to the exhibition "Tsukamasa Yoshinori + U laboratory" dealing with laboratories, I went to the exhibition called "Making by everyone", but I studied very carefully with careful composition using models and drawings, people who know Yoshihasa etc. became. In 2014, there is also a holding exhibition called "aiming at architectural archives".

The importance of Shinki archives is exactly like that.I will tell you many times, keeping valuable materials is insufficient, organizing them, reproducing it in a today's story, making it public, and touching many people is the goal of the archives I think that it will be.

- We talked about the National Museum of Modern Architecture, but what about elsewhere?

Kyoto Institute of Technology arts and crafts museum of "Togo Murano archive", such as drawing more than 50,000 from the bereaved family of Murano's in 1996 has been donated, Matsuguma Hiroshi of the Kyoto Institute of Technology, which is also active as an architectural historian Mainly organized by the professor, open to the public.Since 2000, we have held "Murano Togo Building Design Drawing Exhibition" etc. as part of the survey and survey of materials.Originally the museum housed works such as Art Nouveau posters, but the Murano archive is valuable material that can touch contemporary Japanese architecture.
Besides, there is "DAAS" which is known as "architecture / space digital archives", commonly known as digital architecture. It is a consortium that is a member of major construction companies, architectural design offices and architectural related organizations, and I also serve as a steering committee, but collecting mainly photographs of excellent architectural works and digitally Save it, save it and publish it on the web.The preserved materials are not necessarily limited to photographs, but they are also recorded by architectural drawings and images of superior architectural images that are going to be lost, and recorded and published by name architect's video interview. In essence, it is a digital archive that digitally saves valuable building materials, saves it, and makes it public.

- In the first place, what was the reason why Mr. Tsuyoshi was interested in the archive?

Massachusetts Institute of Technology was the experience in study abroad and the US Library of Congress to the (MIT).The university in the United States is open 24 hours, the environment that the students can learn freely at any time is in place, I was very surprised by the difference with Japanese universities. In the United States, it is important to learn by themselves in the library to the same degree as the lecture by professors. Therefore, every university is focusing on improving the environment of the library. However, it is decisively important to investigate primary materials such as drawings, photographs, various recorded documents, data, etc., not only books, but by storing, storing and organizing such materials Archives are used for use.Archives of these materials in various fields were maintained at the MIT museum. In the United States government, corporations and universities have established archives. After MIT, I studied library science as an international trainee of the Library of Congress, but this library was the largest library in the world and a huge archive of cultural materials at the same time. There was also a archive of the architecture, and we kept the vast observation data of the US Historical Building Research Department (HABS) of the Ministry of the Interior and materials of the architect.
Therefore, in the United States the function of archivist in each field has been established, there is architectural archivist in the whole country, there are also academic societies.Currently, it is a Japanese woman who is active as architectural architect of Congress library.I am involved not only in architecture but also in collecting and preserving music (records, magazines, etc.) and precious old books at KIT.As well as architectural archives, I would like to explore the possibilities of libraries as "accumulation of human knowledge".
Continuing on how to store and organize the archive archives, I will explain from Koji Sato, a full-time researcher.

Organize and preserve architectural archives

- There is a building dedicated to the collection of materials.

Sato founded buildings used for different purpose, university purchased for archival archives, renovated and used it.

- How is concretely stored and organized?

As Mr. Sato explained before, the materials range from drawings, sketches, photographs, models and so on.There are many things such as bluffing using light-sensitive materials, etc., which are handwritten on tracing papers etc., and degradation such as breakage has advanced.Especially, those that are rounded and preserved are torn or just shattered just because they are spread out, so be careful.
First of all, we will spread them carefully and classify them according to projects and age.If necessary, repair will be carried out, and finally it will be paid in neutral paper storage box.The size of the storage box is original from our laboratory and ranges from A2 to A0, and it is used properly according to the size of drawing. To organize it requires huge labor and perseverance. After all, it is necessary to read and understand each drawing and sketch you face for the first time, and organize it as an archive while associating the front and back with each other.

- Are you doing Mr. Sato by yourself now?

Sato full-time is me alone, but fortunately I am also a student of the architecture department of our university. However, in order to raise the efficiency more, it may be necessary to expand organizations and systems.

- How can we store and utilize materials that have been cleaned up?

Sato To some extent, when the likelihood of arrangement is over, we plan exhibitions and lectures and make opportunities for students and the general public to touch architectural archives. In addition, the students of the university's "Dream Architectural Design Project" cultivate the ability to express the world from two-dimensional to three-dimensional through making models from drawings as part of the project, while at the same time seniors of architecture We also use it as a valuable teaching material to learn the design philosophy and method of our company. Also, by reading the drawings that are also the record of the design process, restoring the building while pursuing the design process seems to foster sympathy for building.

- I was impressed by the work I was very attentive.Thank you very much.
